Department of Defense Agencies Authorize Military Services
to Purchase Ground Beef and Poultry Processed
with SureBeam's Revolutionary Food Safety Technology
SAN DIEGO, November 5, 2001 - SureBeam Corporation (Nasdaq: SURE) --
innovator of the electron beam technology that safely eliminates harmful
food borne bacteria -- today announced that the Defense Department has
added to the normal military food procurement authorization lists ground
beef and poultry products that will be processed using electron beam
food safety technology.
SureBeam processed ground beef and fruit products are already sold
across the nation in thousands of supermarkets, as well as by home
delivery, direct mail, and through food service.
"SureBeam's contribution to food safety is based on sound science," said
Larry A. Oberkfell, SureBeam's President and CEO. "It provides the
members of our armed services the same benefit consumers seek: another
tool -- a final step -- for ensuring the safety of food."
Similar to a microwave oven, the SureBeam's electron beam technology
uses ordinary electricity as its energy source to eliminate instantly
the threat of harmful food borne bacteria, such as E. coli O157:H7,
Listeria, Campylobacter and Salmonella without compromising quality.
Food products are typically processed in their final packaging so as to
prevent recontamination or cross contamination. SureBeam technology also
benefits consumers because food spoilage caused by common bacteria can
be significantly reduced, similar to what happens when raw milk is
pasteurized.
Microbiological problems in food led to 129 recalls across the nation
last year, up 37 percent from 1999, according to the Food Industry
Report published in May 2001. According to military research, diarrhea
represents a common health threat to U.S. military forces, especially
those deployed in developing countries.
SureBeam Corporation was created, built, and launched by The Titan
Corporation (NYSE: TTN) in an initial public offering on March 16, 2001.
Headquartered in San Diego, California, SureBeam is a leading provider
of electron beam food safety systems and services for the food industry.
SureBeam's technology significantly improves food quality, prolongs
shelf life, and provides disinfestations that help to protect the
environment. The SureBeam patented system is based on proven electron
beam and x-ray technology that destroys harmful food borne bacteria much
like thermal pasteurization does to milk. This technology can also
eliminate the need for toxic chemical fumigants used in pest control
that may be harmful to the earth's ozone layer.
