Huisken(R) Introduces New Line of Safer Meat

Date: 06/07/01

Contents

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (June 7, 2001) -- Consumers will soon find a new line of better, safer meat products in their grocery stores thanks to a revolutionary pasteurization process which -- similar to a microwave oven -- uses ordinary electricity to help eliminate the threat of harmful food borne bacteria from food. The product line is being introduced in 22 states under the Huisken BeSure(TM) brand.

Five new products are included in Huisken Meats' introductory rollout. The four frozen beef patty packages include 75% and 90% leanness formulations in two- and four-pound sizes. A two-pound ground beef package in 90% leanness also is being marketed. The ground beef package offers convenient, half-pound portions for ease of preparation.

"We're very pleased to see that the food industry is taking another step forward in introducing irradiated products to the public," said Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm. "We're also pleased to see that a Minnesota company is again leading the charge on this issue. A little over a year ago, Huisken became the first producer to offer irradiated ground beef to the public. Now, by launching an entirely separate line of irradiated products -- and taking steps to actively promote it -- Huisken is setting an example that we hope the rest of the industry will quickly emulate.

"Let's not forget what's at stake here," Commissioner Malcolm added. "Foodborne illness can be very serious. In some circumstances, it can be life-threatening -- especially for young children. But irradiation can drastically reduce the risk of getting a food-related disease. It represents the most important advance in food safety since the introduction of pasteurized milk in an earlier era."

Developed by SureBeam Corporation (Nasdaq: SURE), electronic pasteurization is a patented processing system that uses an electron beam generated from ordinary electricity to irradiate food, instantly eliminating the threat of dangerous food borne bacteria, such as E.Coli, Listeria and Salmonella without impacting the product's taste, texture, or nutritional quality.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, food-borne diseases strike 76 million Americans annually, leading to more than 5,000 deaths -- predominantly among children, the elderly, and the unborn. Huisken BeSure beef products using SureBeam(R) technology were developed to help decrease the incidence of food-borne illnesses.

Scientists from the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as major universities and centers of research in the United States and around the world have reviewed the effectiveness, safety and wholesomeness of electronically irradiated meats. The WHO, AMA, ADA, the Mayo Clinic, and most of our nation's major public health departments have endorsed the protection SureBeam(R) provides in the preventing of food borne diseases.

FHS, Inc. is the parent company of Huisken Meats and Trail's Best Snacks. Huisken Meats manufactures frozen beef patties under the Huisken and RG's brands. Trail's Best Snacks makes more than 50 varieties of meat snacks, including beef jerky, kippered beefsteak, pickled sausages, and meat sticks.
